CERCA Slides: Role of Machines

Kick back and relax, your next week or two of instruction is waiting for you in your inbox. We created CERCA Slides to make facilitating ThinkCERCA’s research-based best practices a breeze.
Isaac Asimov, the great science fiction writer, recorded three rules for robots that remain at the center of our discussions about the role of machines in our lives. This set of CERCA Slides highlights some of the debates related to technology. As students explore the question of “How far should we let machines go in our lives” they may find it useful to review these rules.
- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
We have laid out 5 great class sessions for you, but kids in chatty happy classrooms might take a little longer. We would love to see your students write rules or rewrite rules based on the specific technology they are reading about in their CERCAs!!! #CERCAmythinking |
